How to Participate

The “One Book, One Community” program runs from Monday, October 7, through Friday, November 15. Here are some ways you can participate!

Visit the East Lansing Public Library or the Michigan State University Library to borrow a copy of the book or film.

Buy the book and receive a 20% discount off the purchase price at Barnes & Noble East Lansing and the Student Book Store.

Reading groups will be held at Barnes & Noble East Lansing and at the East Lansing Public Library.

Many special events are planned, including a celebrity book reading and a gala showing of Francois Truffaut’s film version of the novel.

Learn more about censorship, science fiction, and the impact of new technologies on reading by attending one of the three panel discussions.

Take a stand against censorship by signing up to read an excerpt from a banned book at one of three “Out of the Ashes” events.

Enjoy great food and conversation about the book at one of two special dinners at an MSU residence hall.

Attend lectures by Ken Wachsberger, editor of a collection of banned books, and Garyn Roberts, who is writing the authorized biography of Ray Bradbury.

Participate in an interactive science fiction research workshop and learn more about this fascinating genre of literature.

Enter Barnes & Noble’s essay contest to win a book shopping spree.

Submit your original creative work based on a theme of the novel to the “One Book, One Community” multimedia gallery.

Read about a special program that will have students in South Africa discussing the book with students at East Lansing High School.
